Course history
- A sign at the first tee, in place since the 1960s, warns that the Black is an extremely difficult course recommended only for highly skilled golfers.
- Tiger Woods won the 2002 U.S. Open there, the first U.S. Open on a publicly owned course, and was the only player to finish under par.
- Lucas Glover won the rain-delayed 2009 U.S. Open.
- Brooks Koepka won the 2019 PGA Championship by two strokes.
- Europe won the 2025 Ryder Cup there, 15 to 13.
Suits
- Long (7,468 yards from the Blue tees) with thick rough, so it favours long, straight drivers.
- Many greens are elevated and well bunkered, demanding high, accurate approaches.
- Narrow fairways on holes such as the 13th punish missed tee shots.
- The hilly walk of about six miles makes it a test of stamina as well as skill.
Signature hole
No. 4
A 517-yard par 5 that drops from the tee and climbs to the green, with sweeping cross bunkers often called the finest par 5 of the Tillinghast era.
