Course history
- Golf has been played on the links since the early 15th century, and a 1552 charter confirmed the townspeople's right to play there.
- The course has hosted The Open 30 times since 1873, more than any other venue.
- Tiger Woods won the 2000 Open there by eight strokes to complete the career Grand Slam.
- Cameron Smith won the 150th Open in 2022 at 20 under par, one ahead of Cameron Young.
- The course record of 61 is shared by Ross Fisher (2017) and Tyrrell Hatton (2024).
Suits
- An exposed links where wind decides how the course plays, rewarding low, controlled ball flight.
- Seven double greens, each shared by two holes, are huge, so long lag putts are common and distance control on the greens matters.
- 112 bunkers, many hidden from the tee, punish players who do not know the safe lines.
- Suits creative shot-makers who can use the ground game and bump-and-run shots.
Signature hole
No. 17, Road Hole
A long par 4 whose tee shot carries the old railway sheds of the Old Course Hotel, with the deep Road Hole Bunker guarding the green and a road and stone wall behind it.
