Course history
- The club was founded in 1891 and is Australia's oldest continually operating golf club.
- The Composite course was created for the 1959 Canada Cup by combining 12 West and 6 East holes.
- The 1998 Presidents Cup, the first held outside the United States, was won 20.5 to 11.5 by the International team under captain Peter Thomson.
- The United States won the Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne in 2011 (19 to 15) and 2019 (16 to 14, with Tiger Woods as playing captain).
- The club has hosted the Australian Open 17 times, most recently in 2025.
Suits
- Firm, fast greens long described as the best putting surfaces in Australia reward precise approach play and touch.
- Most holes dogleg, so the angle into the flag matters more than raw distance.
- Bold, deep bunkering and native-grass rough punish players who miss on the wrong side.
- Strategic risk-reward holes such as the 2nd and 6th reward players who take on carries off the tee.
Signature hole
No. 6
A sharp dogleg-right par 4 of 391 m where the drive must decide whether to carry the bunkers on the corner, often called one of MacKenzie's greatest holes.
